LPIC-3 Mixed Environments

Linux Professional Institute · expert · 90 minutes

Update in progressLinux Professional Institute now publishes this exam as LPIC-3 Mixed Environments 300-300 version 3.0, five topic areas worth 60 points; our bank was written for LPIC-3 300 as two broad domains with the exam-version excuse, checked on 21 September 2026. The questions still teach the subject, but the split per domain has moved.

Expert integration of Linux and Windows in the mixed environments most organisations actually run: Samba implementing SMB so a Linux server shares files indistinguishably from Windows, smb.conf shares, the ID mapping that reconciles the Windows SID and Linux UID/GID models where most permission faults live, and standalone versus domain-member roles; then OpenLDAP directory services with Active Directory being LDAP-based underneath, Samba 4 as an AD domain controller, and joining Linux to AD through SSSD, Winbind and Kerberos for unified single sign-on where clock skew and DNS are the classic failure points.

Two sample questions

Two of the 180, with the answer and the explanation.

1. Which idmap range mistake breaks a domain-member file server?

  1. A range that overlaps the local system's UIDs — correct
  2. A range larger than the number of domain accounts
  3. A range configured identically on two file servers
  4. A range that starts above one hundred thousand

Why: Domain users then collide with local accounts, which produces permission results nobody configured deliberately.

2. Why keep global and per-share settings separate?

  1. Defaults wide, shares override — correct
  2. Shares cannot have any settings
  3. Global settings apply to one share
  4. Separation disables the server

Why: Global settings set server-wide defaults while share sections tailor individual shares.
