Juniper Networks Certified Specialist, Service Provider Routing and Switching

Juniper · intermediate · 90 minutes

In developmentThis course is still being brought to our full standard. The questions and notes are usable, but they have not yet been checked line by line against the vendor’s own training.

The service provider model end to end: a core carrying many customers with the interior protocol confined to infrastructure routes and loopbacks, BGP central and scaled through route reflectors, and a layered mental model where a hidden route means an unresolvable next hop; then MPLS forwarding on labels so the core carries traffic it has no IP route for, LDP and RSVP label distribution, Layer 3 VPNs isolating customers with VRFs, route distinguishers and route targets, Layer 2 pseudowires and multipoint VPLS or EVPN, and the class of service that turns connectivity into a guaranteed service.

Two sample questions

Two of the 197, with the answer and the explanation.

1. Why does a provider commonly run both label distribution protocols?

  1. One carries version four traffic and the other version six in practice
  2. One operates in the core and the other only at the edge
  3. One gives reachability everywhere and the other engineers paths — correct
  4. One allocates labels and the other verifies them

Why: LDP provides a path between every pair of routers with no per-path work, and RSVP is added where a specific route or reservation is required.

2. What is the effect of an unreachable next hop?

  1. More stability
  2. Faster routing
  3. The route is hidden — correct
  4. A new label

Why: An unreachable next hop makes the BGP route inactive (hidden).
